Tottenham Hotspur’s Defensive Woes Deepen as Postecoglou Faces Mounting Pressure

Postecoglou

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has found himself under increasing scrutiny following his side’s 2-2 draw with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

The result saw Spurs set an unwanted Premier League record, having fallen behind in 15 home games in 2024 – the most by any team in a single calendar year.

Wolves took an early lead at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and although the hosts went into the break with a 2-1 advantage, the visitors struck late to earn a share of the points.

Spurs have now conceded 12 goals in their last four matches across all competitions and have managed just two clean sheets in their previous 16 outings.

Postecoglou’s recent form has been a cause for concern, with Tottenham winning just three of their last 13 games, losing six and drawing four. While the Australian manager has contended with an injury crisis, his team’s tactical rigidity has proved costly, leading to questions over his future at the club.

The upcoming fixtures do not provide much respite for Postecoglou, as Spurs face a daunting schedule including matches against Newcastle United, Arsenal, Everton, Brentford, and two clashes with Liverpool by early February.

With key defensive players such as Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Ben Davies, and Destiny Udogie all sidelined, the manager’s commitment to his distinctive playing style may continue to undermine Tottenham’s results.

Reinforcements in the January transfer window could provide Postecoglou with the necessary tools to better implement his philosophy, but it remains to be seen whether the club’s hierarchy will entrust him with further squad investment. As Spurs strive to avoid a bottom-half finish in the Premier League, the pressure on the 59-year-old to turn things around is mounting.
