Mateta Nears Return After Millwall Scare: Crystal Palace Striker’s Remarkable Recovery

Crystal Palace’s star striker, Jean-Philippe Mateta, is on the verge of making a triumphant return to the pitch after a harrowing injury sustained during an FA Cup clash against Millwall.

The incident, which occurred on March 1, 2025, left fans and teammates alike in shock as Mateta was stretchered off the field with a severe head injury.

The injury took place in the sixth minute of the FA Cup fifth-round match at Selhurst Park. Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts, in an attempt to clear a forward pass, collided with Mateta, delivering a high boot to the striker’s head.

The impact left Mateta with a severe laceration to his left ear, requiring 25 stitches. The match, which Crystal Palace went on to win 3-1, was overshadowed by the distressing scene.

Mateta received immediate medical attention on the pitch, including oxygen, before being rushed to the hospital. The severity of the injury led to an extended suspension for Roberts, who was initially handed a three-match ban. The English FA later increased the suspension to six matches, citing the reckless nature of the challenge.

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner provided an optimistic update on Mateta’s condition, stating that the striker is recovering well and is expected to return for the FA Cup quarter-final against Fulham on March 29.

“He’s at home, and fortunately, he had no fractures or concussion. The wound is healing as expected,” Glasner said. “He will join us for training in Marbella next week, and if all goes well, he should be available for the Fulham game.”

Mateta’s recovery has been bolstered by the support of his teammates and family. His mother traveled from France to be by his side, ensuring he receives the best care possible.

Mateta’s return is eagerly anticipated by Crystal Palace fans, as the striker has been a key player for the team this season, scoring 15 goals in 33 appearances across all competitions. His presence on the field will be crucial for the Eagles as they aim to advance further in the FA Cup and secure a strong finish in the Premier League.
