Colts sign K Michael Badgley to replace injured Spencer Shrader

Syndication: The RecordDetroit Lions kicker Michael Badgley warms up before the Dallas Cowboys game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023.

The Colts are adding a familiar leg, signing veteran kicker Michael Badgley to the 53-man roster after Spencer Shrader sustained a season-ending knee injury in Week 5.

Badgley, 30, returns to Indianapolis after initially signing with the club in 2018 as an undrafted free agent, though he was waived before the season. He then joined the Colts again in 2021 and converted 18 of 21 field goals and all 39 extra points across 12 games.

He did not play in 2024 after suffering a training-camp hamstring tear with Detroit. In 2023, he appeared in four games for the Lions, going 4 for 4 on field goals and 13 for 15 on extra points.

Over 64 career games split between the Los Angeles Chargers, Colts, Tennessee Titans, Chicago Bears and Lions, Badgley has made 82.4 percent of his field goals (98 for 119) and 96.0 percent of extra points (168 for 175), with a career long of 59 yards.

Indianapolis moved quickly after losing Shrader, who tore the ACL and MCL in his right knee on a late hit during an extra point against the Las Vegas Raiders. The second-year kicker was off to a strong start, leading the NFL with 53 points while hitting 13 of 14 field goals and all 14 extra points. He has been placed on injured reserve.
